Daily walk: live location or a return message?

Start with the question, not the map

Ask what needs to be known: that the walk began, that return was expected within a window, or how to meet along a route. “I’m home” may answer the final question; coordinating a changing route may temporarily need more.

Do not turn an affectionate routine into hidden monitoring. Purpose, recipients, duration and the right to say no should be agreed with the person carrying the phone.

Use the minimum data suited to the purpose

The European data-minimisation principle calls for data adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary. In family practice, consider time and return message first, then one location point, then live updates only when useful.

Location describes the device within technical limits, not health, intention or the person’s certain presence. It may be inaccurate, stale or unavailable because of battery, permissions or connectivity.

Live location is temporary, revocable and richer

WhatsApp documents sharing with an individual or group chat for a selected duration and stopping at any time. Updates end on expiry or stop; a static thumbnail of the last updated location remains visible.

Check group membership, duration and the stop control. Apple and Android let users review who or which app accesses location. Renew the choice when routes or relationships change.

A return message reports an outcome, not a route

A return message or check-in reveals less movement and communicates the final result. It works when the person accepts or remembers the routine, the recipient sees the alert and meaning is clear.

No reply does not prove an incident: delay, phone, network or forgetfulness may explain it. Agree a realistic window and sequence rather than automatic surveillance. As with arrival planning, define what “home” means in advance without applying one journey rule to every walk.

Handle a missed return with an agreed sequence

Set the window, first attempt, second channel, backup person and conditions for escalation. Start with a call or message when appropriate; inspect only information the person agreed to share. Do not install or activate tracking without their knowledge.

In My Safe Circle, location and message are optional with signals; there is no continuous tracking. The app does not detect events, call responders, or guarantee delivery or action. For immediate danger, call 112 in the EU or the local emergency number directly.

A concrete scenario to rehearse together

Before the walk the person chooses an approximate time and a return message. Write the observable fact first and do not turn an assumption into certainty.

Live location is used only when the route makes it useful and for an agreed duration. Give the next step to one named person and an accepted backup.

An “I’m back” message shares less data but depends on memory and connectivity. Set a realistic window and define the reply before starting.

A short familiar walk may need only a return greeting and no tracking. Keep only necessary data and show clearly who will receive it.

When not to use the app and how to maintain fallback

A missing message beyond the margin does not prove an incident and starts the second channel. If a call or direct conversation solves the task, stop at the simpler solution.

Location may be inaccurate or unavailable and cannot guarantee anyone is watching. Prepare calls, SMS, paper numbers and an agreed in-person check where appropriate.

If the phone loses connectivity, backup uses calls, SMS or the agreed check. Review consent, contacts, devices and availability whenever the routine changes.

With concrete signs of danger, contact local services without waiting for a map. For immediate danger use the local service directly and do not wait for a notification.
