WhatsApp, Telegram and safety apps: comparing privacy
Privacy comparison is not a contest. WhatsApp describes personal messages as end-to-end encrypted; Telegram separates cloud chats from individual Secret Chats, which are end-to-end encrypted. A safety app should be assessed through its documentation, recipients, accounts, devices, backups and metadata, not through an absolute privacy promise.
Separate encryption from the whole path
WhatsApp states that personal messages use end-to-end encryption. Telegram uses synchronised cloud chats and offers individual Secret Chats with end-to-end encryption, not group chats. A fair comparison says which conversation is actually used: calling an entire service “private” hides important boundaries.
Check recipients and groups
An encrypted message is still shared with every recipient, group member and authorised device. Check who can add people, forward content, take screenshots or see previews. A family group is not automatically restricted: reduce membership and use a separate chat for information that genuinely needs sharing.
Assess backups, accounts and devices
Chat encryption does not automatically describe backups, lock-screen notifications, linked devices or account access. Review cloud copies, phone lock, open sessions and account recovery. Remember metadata and permissions
