Walking home alone: a companion call, location sharing or SOS?
Having company during a journey is different from telling someone you arrived. Choose the tool before leaving, with someone who has accepted the role.
Define what you want from your contact
Do you want a conversation during the walk, temporary location sharing or just an arrival message? State the request clearly. Someone waiting for All OK is not watching the journey and should not expect an automatic alert when you change route.
Use a call for company
An agreed call provides conversation along the way. Services such as VIOLA WALK HOME advertise video calls with operators; check availability, language, charges and access before relying on them. Do not assume public emergency response or help on site. Stay aware of your surroundings and stop somewhere suitable to use the screen.
Choose location or automatic arrival carefully
Temporary location can show progress, subject to connectivity and accuracy. Apple offers Check In for an arrival or timer between compatible iPhones. Check both devices and the data that may be shared. A map does not prove wellbeing; confirm that sharing has ended after the journey.
Use All OK for a manual arrival message
If the agreement is “I will tell you when I get indoors”, My Safe Circle lets you manually send All OK to selected contacts, optionally with location. SOS is a separate action confirmed in the app. Arrival, detours and failure to return are not detected automatically. Prepare recipients and notifications before leaving.
An example from the bus stop
Agree before travelling: “I will send All OK when I get home; if I miss the connection, I will message you”. The contact confirms availability and both of you know the backup number. Update the agreement if plans change when it is safe to do so. A fixed time should not become automatic evidence of danger.
Prepare for connection problems
Check charge and connection, keep the contact number and consider a call or SMS where available. In immediate danger, contact local emergency services without waiting for the app. An announced All OK practice before leaving shows what the recipient sees without creating a false SOS.
