Apple Check In follows an arrival or timer in Messages between compatible iPhones. WhatsApp lets someone write a free-form update in a selected chat. My Safe Circle asks approved contacts a family question with two explicit outcomes. The fit depends on the task, phones and agreement between people.
Choose the task first
“Let me know when you arrive” asks for a journey outcome. “Message if plans change” asks for conversation. “How are you this evening?” asks for a self-reported state. Mixing these tasks creates expectations no app can meet.
Check phones, versions, accounts, connectivity, recipient and familiarity. A missing outcome may result from battery, network, a lost device or no response; by itself it does not prove an incident.
Apple Check In: arrival or timer between iPhones
Apple documents Check In in Messages on iPhone: both sender and recipient need iOS 17 or later. “When I Arrive” uses a destination and travel mode; the timer option waits for completion within the chosen period. A successful arrival ends Check In and alerts the contact.
If Check In does not end as expected and the user does not respond, the contact may receive the selected data. Limited includes current location, battery and signal for iPhone and Apple Watch; Full adds the travelled route and location of the last iPhone unlock or Watch removal. Location sharing is unavailable in South Korea and may vary elsewhere under local law.
WhatsApp: free-form and cross-platform
WhatsApp runs on iPhone and Android and supports a chosen person or group, text, audio, calls and conversational context. It may be enough for “I’m here” when the person remembers the agreement and everyone knows who reads and acts.
It does not monitor that message as an arrival journey. An active connection is required to send and receive; ticks and read receipts describe technical states and settings, not safety or ownership. A precise phrase and family rule may solve many routines without another tool.
My Safe Circle: a family question with distinct outcomes
My Safe Circle is available on iOS and Android. A Premium user can create a manual “How are you?” request for already approved contacts; replying is free. The response offers “I’m OK” and “I need help”, with optional message and current location, and the request remains available for 30 minutes.
It is a self-reported family check-in, not automatic arrival confirmation, and it does not follow a journey. SOS and ALL OK are separate actions. The app does not detect events, call responders automatically, or guarantee delivery, reading or action.

Rehearse the route and define fallback
Run an announced rehearsal without a risky trip: Apple with a nearby destination or timer, WhatsApp with the agreed phrase, and MSC with a test request and response. Check what the recipient sees, what data is included, and how time or a changed plan is handled.
Choose a main and backup channel: call, SMS or another contact according to availability. Write the window, first responsible person and escalation threshold. For immediate danger, call 112 in the EU or the local number directly.
