Google Maps or My Safe Circle for live location?

Published · 2 min read

Choose by audience and task, not a universal winner. Compare Google’s official guide with My Safe Circle’s still-in-beta location feature.

Feature availability

Instructions for My Safe Circle describe version 2.2, still in development and beta, and not released in app stores. Installed versions may lack the feature; interface and behaviour may change during testing.

Availability and disclosure

Published by the My Safe Circle team, this comparison uses documentation, not comparative performance tests. Maps documents sharing; My Safe Circle 2.2 remains in development. Availability is not equivalent.

When Maps may suffice

For meetings, Maps allows choosing people and duration, and documents a link for people without Google accounts. A link exposes location to its holders: choose the sending channel carefully and check official requirements.

When to consider a Circle

My Safe Circle describes accounts, approved contacts, temporary sessions and an optional message alongside All OK and SOS. It may suit a network already using these signals rather than creating a new chat each time.

Compare visible data too

Maps documents name, photo, recent position and battery status. Do not assume My Safe Circle exposes the same data: check its manual summary. For both, examine recipients, ending, connectivity and retained data.

Guides for your next step

To set up a session, read duration and recipients. For update issues, use the screen-off checks. For data after the session, see Stop, consent withdrawal and deletion.

Frequently asked questions

Which has more accurate location?

No comparative tests establish a winner. Device, environment, permissions and network prevent universal accuracy or continuity promises.

Is the feature already in app stores?

No. This guide describes version 2.2, still in development and beta; it does not promise availability in the published app.

Does a live session guarantee someone will act?

No. Sharing a point does not confirm a contact is watching the map or can respond. Agree separately who will respond.
