Live location while hiking: prepare before leaving
Away from towns, sharing can stop when you need it. Prepare a route and contact plan rather than relying entirely on map updates.
Feature availability
Instructions for My Safe Circle describe version 2.2, still in development and beta, and not released in app stores. Installed versions may lack the feature; interface and behaviour may change during testing.
A plan without live sharing
Leave a consenting contact your planned route, return window and change-reporting method. Check local conditions and guidance. Live sharing is neither a rescue service nor an incident detector.
Check coverage and power
An offline map is not a transmitted location. GPS reception and data connectivity are different requirements. Beta My Safe Circle does not queue points for later sending; do not promise recovery of uncovered sections.
Test before the trail
Test with the recipient where coverage exists, then with the screen locked. Carry appropriate maps and charging equipment. A home-area test does not establish coverage along the hike.
Old point, agreed action
Agree who attempts contact and after what window. An old point proves neither immobility nor accident. With concrete danger indications, follow local service procedures without waiting for sharing to recover.
Guides for your next step
To set up a session, read duration and recipients. For update issues, use the screen-off checks. For data after the session, see Stop, consent withdrawal and deletion.
Frequently asked questions
Does it record points where there is no network?
The 2.2 manual says points are not queued for later sending. Do not treat it as an offline route recorder.
Is the feature already in app stores?
No. This guide describes version 2.2, still in development and beta; it does not promise availability in the published app.
Does a live session guarantee someone will act?
No. Sharing a point does not confirm a contact is watching the map or can respond. Agree separately who will respond.
