Live location stops updating with the screen off: what to check
Does the map stay on one point when you turn the screen off? Distinguish an old position from a new one at the same place before changing every permission. A useful check starts with point age and a controlled test, not an assumption that the person stopped moving.
Check whether the point is actually old
In My Safe Circle 2.2, still in beta, Last location captured measures time from GPS capture. A reset means a new point arrived even if the map looks unchanged. Indoors, small movements can reflect accuracy differences.
Note the age and check that the session has not expired. Remaining duration and location age measure different things. Set up the test with the temporary sharing guide.
Screen lock and force quitting are different
Backgrounding, locking the screen, dismissing an app and force stopping it are different actions. Even Always access does not promise restart after every interruption; the operating system controls execution.
If the test works with the screen on, repeat it by only locking the screen. Do not change network, battery and permissions together. Otherwise the cause stays unclear. Live sharing does not queue fixes for later upload.
Check the chosen iPhone access
Apple distinguishes while-in-use access from Always. An already started My Safe Circle session may continue in the background when allowed; Always supports recovery, rather than making GPS more accurate or guaranteeing continuous service.
Open My Safe Circle settings → Location → Always where available. Read the app’s instructions first. Returning rechecks permissions without starting automatically: start a session and repeat the test.
On Android, check the service too
On Android 11 and later, the indicative route is App settings → Permissions → Location → Allow all the time. Labels vary. An active location service is different from simply keeping a screen open; check its state as well.
Do not remove every battery protection as your first fix. Look for restrictions applied to the app and consult the manufacturer. Permission changes do not fix missing connectivity, disabled system location or poor GPS accuracy.
Test without leaving home
Start a short session with an approved recipient while the app is visible. Wait for the first point, note its age and lock the screen for several minutes. The recipient should check freshness rather than expect the marker to move.
Reopen and compare. Test Wi-Fi/mobile changes separately. Do not send test emergencies: voluntary live sharing is sufficient. Stop and confirm the result before starting another test.
A still map does not explain what happened
Limited automatic recovery describes a recovery limitation, not necessarily a stopped session. An explicit network or permission message needs attention. Check the reported condition and use direct contact when reliable information is needed.
Do not infer an accident, deliberate choice or route from an old point. To stop retention, read withdrawal and erasure; Stop alone is insufficient. Report model, system and test times without publicly posting coordinates.
Frequently asked questions
Does Always guarantee screen-off updates?
No. It can support continuity and recovery, but network, system and battery still matter. It does not guarantee restart after force quitting.
Can I test indoors?
Yes. Check whether capture age renews. A fresh point at the same place need not move the marker.
Should I remove all battery limits?
No. Establish the problem and app-specific restrictions first. Change one condition at a time and check device instructions.
