WhatsApp poll or family check-in?
A WhatsApp poll gathers group preferences: “Saturday or Sunday?”. A family check-in instead asks a person to report “I’m OK” or “I need help”. Both present tappable options, but purpose, audience and the meaning of silence are different.
Similar controls do not make the purpose the same
Use a poll for a collective choice: day, menu, time or preference. The question belongs to the group and the result aggregates votes; it does not automatically assign someone to check on another person.
Use a check-in when the question concerns selected recipients’ self-reported state and the answers need two prepared meanings. Neither tool measures health, detects incidents or guarantees action.
How a WhatsApp poll currently works
WhatsApp describes polls as questions with real-time answers in a group chat. The creator enters a question and up to 12 options; multiple answers are allowed by default but can be disabled. A voter can remove a vote.
Poll details show results and how many members voted. The creator receives one push notification per poll when WhatsApp notifications are enabled. The poll and its details belong to the selected chat, so do not treat it as anonymous or private for personal information.

In a check-in, expiry without a response is an outcome to handle under the family rule, not proof of danger. Set a window, first attempt, second channel and backup contact. For concrete immediate danger, call the local number directly.

Set rules, privacy and fallback
Before use ask: should the whole group see the answer? Who acts? Does each option have one meaning? For sensitive or individual matters, a private call may fit better than either.
Rehearse without simulating danger: create a harmless poll and test request, inspect notifications, recipient list and expiry, then test the second channel. For immediate danger, call 112 in the EU or the local number.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a poll to ask whether everyone is OK?
It can collect votes, but its meaning remains collective and silence does not automatically flag a problem. A separate rule and follow-up are needed.
Are WhatsApp polls anonymous?
Do not treat them as anonymous: the poll is in the group and “View votes” exposes vote details. Avoid personal questions when that audience is inappropriate.
