Silent mode and Do Not Disturb: what can change an alert
Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, volume and notification permission are different controls. The system, version, maker, channels and network can change the result: observe the real phone and do not promise a sound you cannot guarantee.
Separate silent mode, Do Not Disturb, volume and permission
Silent mode reduces or removes sound; Do Not Disturb or Focus filters interruptions and exceptions; volume sets a level; permission decides whether the app may deliver notifications. One control does not replace the others.
Systems and channels follow different rules
iOS and Android expose different paths. On Android, a channel may have its own settings; on iOS, notifications and Focus follow system rules. Do not transfer a name or outcome from one phone to another.
Show status without confusing it with sound
An icon, in-app status or technical receipt may confirm that a command was recorded; it does not prove that someone heard, saw or read it. Make the outcome visible and mark it when uncertain.
Respect preferences and consent
An exception for a contact or app can increase interruptions and must not be assumed. Agree the acceptable alert, recipients and backup channel; do not bypass silent mode or Do Not Disturb without an explicit documented choice.
Run an announced test on the real phone
Tell sender and recipient, then test locked and unlocked screens with usual volume, silent mode, Do Not Disturb and normal permission. Record separately: delivered, shown, sounded and received by the person. Repeat after updates.
Prepare a different channel
If an alert does not arrive or remains uncertain, follow the plan: call, SMS or backup person, according to coverage and consent. No setting guarantees attention or response; for concrete immediate danger call the local emergency number directly.
